The Family of
James A. "Lon" White and Callie Wofford

INTRODUCTION

This page last updated March 1, 2014.

James Alonzo "Lon" White was born November 23, 1857 to parents James L. White and Martha McArthur. His parents were married in Noxubee County, Mississippi in 1851, and the 1860 census of Noxubee County listed Leroy and Martha White with children who appear to be Lon and a few of his brothers. Based on this information, I believe Lon was born in Noxubee County, Mississippi. It seems that his family lived near the county line between Noxubee and Winston Counties.

Based on census records and discussions with White researcher Peggy Herman, it appears that Lon descended from Sherwood White, a veteran of the Revolutionary War from North Carolina who was listed in the household of his son James White in the 1840 census of Winston County. It seems that this James White was married first to a lady whose name began with M. who was the mother of James' eight or so children, including my James L. (Leroy) White. According to cemetery records for the White Cemetery in Mashulaville, Mississippi (on the county line between Noxubee and Winston), M. White, wife of James White, died in 1841. James appears to have remarried before 1850 to a lady named Finetta.

So the lineage of my White family appears to be as such: Sherwood White was father of James White who married M. James and M. were parents of James L. (Leroy) White who married Martha McArthur. James L. and Martha were the parents of James Alonzo "Lon" White.

On October 17, 1883, J.A. (Lon) White married Callie M. Wofford. Soon thereafter, the U.S. government granted them 160 acres east of Louisville, Winston County, Mississipi to homestead. Here they farmed the land and reared a family, and later the land was handed down and divided among the generations. On September 12, 1884, their first son was born there, and later the rest of their children were born there also. J.A. (Lon) farmed the land there until he died December 28, 1894 at his home. He was only 37 years old. He was buried in Murphy Creek Cemetery near his father James L. White.

From what I have been able to infer from stories told to me by my grandfather and from public land deed records, it appears that Callie Wofford White was a shrewd business woman. She bought and sold land and timber more than most men and apparently helped her son Tom White run his saw mill. But recently I learned quite a bit about her family.

Callie M. Wofford was the daughter of Mary Mitchell and John Wofford. Mary was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson (TJ) Mitchell and Margaret Triplett. T.J. Mitchell was apparently quite well-to-do in the years before the Civil War and owned a significant share of land in Winston County near Noxubee County. In September 1855, he gave his wife and children a deed to a sizeable piece of land and later gave his daughter Mary approximately $1875 in "personal property". This was in the 1860's, and the fact that he had over $1000 of "stuff" that he could just give away is remarkable. Sometime during the early-mid 1860's, Mary married a man named Stephen Burch. Mary and Stephen had a son named Jefferson Davis Burch. Stephen Burch died not long after the child was born, and Mary soon remarried to John Wofford around 1867. John and Mary had Callie (whose full name is Margaret Caroline) in 1868, but Mary died in 1869 when Callie was just 9 months old. Apparently John didn't want anything to do with Mary's son Jeff Davis, so he took Callie and left Jeff Davis to live with Mary's mother Margaret Mitchell. The irony is that a few years later in 1874, when Callie was 4 years old, John Wofford sued his mother-in-law Margaret Mitchell on behalf of the children Callie and Jeff Davis, claiming to be their "next friend" in court. He was suing Margaret because her husband T.J. had died intestate two years earlier (1872), and she had never had his estate divided up between his heirs. So John sued her so these precious children could get their fair share of this magnificent estate. Margaret responded back in court, basically saying something to the effect of the following:

"Magnificent estate, pooey! When T.J. Mitchell died, he was only worth $65, and all those lush crops John Wofford said were growing on the land at the time of T.J.'s death were planted by ME with MY OWN MONEY while he was kicking his heels up in Texas. And yeah, I have been living on the land and enjoying its fruits since his death, but Jeff Davis Burch has been living with me since the day of his birth, and John Wofford has never spent a DIME towards the support of his deceased wife's child. So he has NO RIGHT to call himself the "next friend" of Jeff Davis Burch. Not only that, but I am old and have had to work my fingers to the bone to support myself and J.D. Burch and to keep the taxes paid on this land, so go blow".
Of course, I'm paraphrasing here, but while the court ruled in favor of John Wofford, he did not get as much of that "magnificent estate" as he wanted. The court ruled that neither Jeff Davis Burch nor any of Margaret and T.J. Mitchell's surviving adult children had any right to the personal property that T.J. might have left when he died, nor to any of his money. (I'm assuming this was because Jeff Davis had been living with Margaret on the estate since his birth and because the surviving children had failed to enter a plea on their own behalf.) But the court did order all of T.J.'s land holdings (including the land originally deeded to his children in 1855) to be divided in proper shares among all of the surviving heirs: grandchildren Jeff Davis Burch and Callie Wofford (children of the deceased daughter Mary) and the surviving children Sarah A. Jernigan, Martha Kirk (both of whom were adults and married) and Jeff Mitchell (a minor at the time). However, since Callie had not received any prior benefit from the estate to date, the court awarded the young Callie $100 cash as her share of the inheritance, in addition to her share of the divided land. Read the transcribed petition here.

So it seems to me that Callie was reared from a young age to be estranged from her mother's family, the Mitchells, Jernagins, and Kirks. I wonder if they were ever reconciled? I also have to wonder if she fared too much better with her father's family. When Callie was 10 years old, John remarried and shipped Callie off to live with his mother Jane Young and attend boarding school. John went on to produce a whole other family with his second wife. Poor Callie. It seems she was not really close to her father. I'm not terribly surprised, though. As far as her father's family goes, John Wofford's father Nathaniel died when he was an infant, so he never really knew his real father. And his mother Jane remarried to Alexander Young when John was just 3 years old. I don't know if John lived with his mother and stepfather, but his stepfather died about 10 years later. Alexander and Jane had a daughter named Alice Young. When Callie was 12 years old, she was listed on the 1880 census twice: once in Winston County with her grandmother Jane Young and Aunt Alice as a boarder at school and then a second time in Noxubee County with her father John and stepmother Louisa with her new step-brothers and sisters.

So it seems that Callie had a hard life coming up, but her adult life wasn't much easier. She was only 15 years old when she married J.A. White. I know 15 years was more mature then than now, but it still seems young to me. Callie had 4 kids in 10 years (not too bad for back then), but the youngest Carrye was only 1 year old when J.A. died. J.A. and Callie were only married for 11 years before she became a widow at age 26 with 4 kids to feed. It appears that it was about that time that Callie got into the business of buying and selling land for profit and to sell or cut the timber from it. She even bought swamp land from the State of Mississippi so she could have it for the timber. In 1918, she was appointed as a messenger to the Baptist Association by Murphy Creek Baptist Church in Louisville, which seems to be a quite an honor for a woman of those times. She also buried three of her four children in a span of 9 years, beginning with daughter Ida in 1912, son Neal in 1917, and daughter Carrye in 1921. After Neal's death in 1917 and his wife Belle's death in 1921, Callie reared their two sons, Davis and Henry Lee White. When Henry Lee married in 1932, Callie gave him her house and moved next door to live with her son Tom. It was in Tom's house that she died on July 15, 1936. She was buried in Murphy Creek Cemetery next to her husband J.A. White and her daughter Ida Warner.

  1. Thomas A. White
Born: September 12, 1884 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi
Married:  February 12, 1911 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi
    Spouse:  Bonnie I. Hamm
Died:  November 16, 1938,probably in Winston County, Mississippi
Buried:  Murphy Creek Cemetery, Winston County, Mississippi
  2. Tom was the first child born to Lon and Callie White and the only child to live past his 30's. Born in 1884, he was only 10 years old when his father died. As a result, the first census that lists Tom is the 1900 census in Winston County, where he is listed with his brother and sisters in the household with their widowed mother. By April 1910, Tom, then in his 20's, was the owner and foreman at a sawmill in the Webster community. He married Bonnie Hamm in February of the next year, 1911, and their first child Carrie (named for Tom's sister) was born later that year in October. Four more children followed before the end of the decade: Dan in 1913, James in 1914, Harry (nicknamed "Crick") in 1917, and Jack in 1919. When the censustaker came by in January 1920, Tom and Bonnie were still living in Webster, but Tom was listed as a general farmer for his own account. Also living with them was King Ham, listed as a cousin who worked at the lumber mill. The family was living next door to Frank and Margrette Ham, Bonnie's brother. Tom's mother Callie was listed as living uptown in Louisville, and the day the censustaker visited her house, he listed Tom's children Carrie and Dan as living with Callie. They must have been just staying for the weekend or something as they were also listed with Tom and Bonnie just a week later. By November of that year, 1920, daughter Louise joined the family, and son Tom Jr was born four years later in 1924. By 1930, Callie White had moved so she was living next door to Tom and Bonnie. In the 1930 census, Tom was again listed as a farmer, and daughter Louise was listed as Fannie L. The next year, 1931, daughter Carrie became the first child to marry when she married Winford Stewart. Tom, being the last living child, buried his mother Callie in July 1936. Son Dan married later that year in October 1936 to Lucille Counts. Almost two years later, though, Tom died in November 1938. He was buried in Murphy Creek Cemetery, the same cemetery where his parents and sister Ida were buried. Daughter Louise was married a year later in 1939 to Paul Blanton. James married in 1941 to Margaret Cutts, and Jack married in 1947 to Gertie Eaves. Son Harry "Crick" served as a private in the Marine Corps during World War II and returned home at the end of the war. He never married. Fifteen years later, in 1961, Bonnie died and was buried beside Tom at Murphy Creek Cemetery. After Bonnie died, Tom Jr married the next year in 1962 to Elizabeth Hinkle.

  3. Robert Neal White (sometimes spelled Rurel or Ruel due to the spelling of his son Davis' name. He is usually listed just as R. Neal)
Born:  February 18, 1886 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi
Married:  February 10, 1907 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi
Spouse:  Mary Belle (or Bell) McGahey
Divorced: September 29, 1914 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi
Died:  March 21, 1917 in Sarah, Beckham County, Oklahoma
    Buried:  Doxey-Sayre Cemetery, Sarah, Oklahoma

See Neal and Belle's page for more information on their family.

  4. Ida White
Born:  February 08, 1888 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi
Married:  December 31, 1903 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi
    Spouse:  Joe A. Warner
Died:  August 23, 1912, probably in Winston County, Mississippi
Buried:  Murphy Creek Cemetery, Winston County, Mississippi

Ida was the first to marry in 1903. She was also 15 years old when she married. She and Joe Warner lived with his parents at least until their son Wallace was born in 1910. It seems odd for the times that they were married for 7 years before having a child, but the 1910 census shows that he was her first child. Their son Clyde was born a year later in 1911, and an infant son was born and died on April 20, 1912 and buried at Murphy Creek Cemetery. Ida died four months later in August 1912 and was buried beside her infant son. Joe remarried to some lady named Callie and was living with her, Wallace, and Clyde in Winston County in 1920. Sometime between 1920 and 1937, Joe moved the family to Choffee (or Chaffee), Missouri. In 1937, Ida's brother Tom White and her nephews Henry Lee and Davis (children of her deceased brother Neal) filed a lawsuit against the Warners to have the family land divided among all of Callie White's heirs. Court records show that at the time, Clyde was living at the Naval Air Station in San Diego, and Wallace and Joe were in Choffee (or Chaffee), Missouri. That the last record I have found for the Warners, for now...

  5. Carrye (or Carrie) White
Born:  December 24, 1893 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi
Married:  December 11, 1919 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi
    Spouse:  Jack Porter
Died:  July 06, 1921 in Greene County, Arkansas, probably in Paragould
    Buried:  Unknown

Jack and Carrie Porter were listed on the 1920 census in Paragould, Greene County, Arkansas as lodgers in the home of William and Isabella Smith. Smith was a foreman at a local stone mill, and other lodgers in the household were workers for the railroad. Jack Porter's occupation was listed as an electrician for the telephone company. Perhaps this is why he and Carrie moved to Arkansas? His birthplace was listed as Illinois; perhaps he met Carrie when he visited Winston County when the telephone lines were put in?

According to Davis White, Carrie and Jack had two infants both of whom died the same day they were born (or were stillborn). The first was born July 4, 1920. The second was born a year later on July 3, 1921. Carrie died three days later on July 6, 1921. The Arkansas Department of Health, Division of Vital Records, Certificates of Death, Date 1914-1923 show a Carrie Ora Porter who died in Greene County, Arkansas on July 6, 1921. Based on the 1920 census listing, I am assuming this is my Carrie Porter. A quick search of the Arkansas GenWeb Cemeteries Surname Index page (http://www.argenweb.net/greene/CEM/CEMTRAN/cemetery.htm) did not yield her name in the surname listing of Greene County cemeteries. I still do not know where Carrie is buried, but there are three native sandstone rocks marking graves right next to Ida Warner's grave in Murphy Creek Cemetery. Could these rocks mark the graves of Carrie and her two infants?

The only other record found to date of Jack Porter is a land deed in Winston County, Mississippi (Book 38 Page 12) where JW Porter of New Mexico sold to TA White of Winston County for $200 land in NE1/4 of NE1/4 S29 T15N R13E, 40 acres. Date of deed Jan 19, 1922. Porter appeared in Bernallilo, New Mexico on Feb 7, 1922. Deed recorded in Winston County July 1, 1922. This appears to be Carrie's husband selling back to her brother Tom White some of the family land that had been sold to her by her mother Callie. Nothing else is known of Jack Porter.

I have this story playing in my head... It's the summer of 1919 [bear with me here, I'm making some of this up], and Winston County is finally getting telephone lines put in. In the Webster community, a young, tall, dark, and handsome electrician named Jack makes the acquaintance of a young lady named Carrie. Perhaps they met at church? Perhaps she brought him sweet tea as he put up phone lines near her home? Perhaps she met him at the sawmill ran by her brother and mother when he came by the mill to arrange for a delivery of freshly milled telephone poles. Jack and Carrie fall in love at first sight, much to the dismay of her family. After all, everyone knows these telephone folks are itinerant workers, moving on to somewhere else when the job is done here. As the year comes to a close and winter approaches, Jack gets word that it is time to move on. He and Carrie decide they cannot live without each other, so they get married on December 11, 1919 in Winston County. Immediately after the wedding, he and Carrie say good-bye to her family and follow his job to Paragould, Greene County, Arkansas, in the northeastern corner of the state. There they make the acquaintance of William and Isabella Smith. William is a foreman at the stone mill, and he and his wife Isabella have opened their home as a boarding house to itinerant workers who come through their community with the railroad. They open their home to Jack and Carrie, who has just found out she is expecting their first child. Less than 30 days from when they married in Mississippi, the census taker lists Jack and Carrie in the Smith household in Arkansas on January 7, 1920. But there seems to be a problem with Carrie's baby, and the baby comes early on July 4, 1920 and dies the same day. Hearbroken and a long way from her mother and sister, Carrie feels devastated and alone. But let's hope that Isabella, a mother herself though her children are adults, is able to provide some comfort for Carrie. Within a few months, Jack and Carrie are excited to learn they are expecting again. This second baby is born exactly 364 days after the birth and death of their first baby. Unfortunately, this baby also dies the same day, July 3, 1921. The birth must have been hard on Carrie because she is unable to recover, and she also dies just three days later on July 6, 1921. But what happens next? I suspect that Carrie was laid to rest in Paragould but that Jack was unable to afford a proper tombstone for her. And what of Jack? He mourns for his lost wife and their two lost children but eventually moves on with his life when the work in Paragould is finished. Later that year, Jack follows his work to Bernalillo, New Mexico, just outside Albuquerque. While there, Carrie's brother Tom writes him and asks to buy back from him the 40 acres of family land in Winston County that had been Carrie's. Jack agrees to the sale, Tom draws up the deed, and Jack goes to the courthouse in Bernalillo and signs the land over to Tom White on February 7, 1922. Having cut his last tie to the painful memories he has of Mississippi, Jack rides off into the sunset and the mists of time.

OK, maybe I'm being a little dramatic, but Carrie and Jack represent a branch of my family that no one seems to know anything about. I would enjoy anyone shedding a more accurate light on this seemingly tragic couple.
